JAPANESE STUDENT'S BREAD GOES ON DISPLAY AT CATHEDRAL
A stylish creation of display bread baked by Japanese student Chiyo Hirano is being
displayed at Leicester Cathedral to celebrate organic harvest month.
Chiyo (35) is studying bakery at Leicester College for a year through the British Life Tours
organisation.
Chiyo said she was enjoying her time studying at the college. She is combining the bakery
course with learning the English language and traditions.
She was one of a group of bakery students at the college who joined a Melton Mowbray
company's efforts to promote organic harvest month by rising to the challenge of baking
an impressive range of display breads.

Mr Jones invited the first year National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) level two bakery
students to bake the display breads as part of an organic harvest celebration. His
company, Soyfoods, manufactures soya products and imports and distributes fresh
organic produce.
He said: `This is traditionally the season for celebrating harvest. lVs a time when we ask
others to join in promoting organic harvest month and when we try to revive the craft
tradition of making harvest display breads. This competition gives students the chance to
see how creative and rewarding craft baking can be."
The students produced non edible dough sculptures using organic produce. Their creations
will now be used for window displays throughout the county promoting organic eating.
